Monel K500

Monel Alloy K-500

Monel alloy K-500 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-copper alloy built to combine Monel’s excellent corrosion resistance with much higher strength and hardness. Its chemistry is tightly controlled: nickel (plus cobalt) is the principal element (minimum ~63%), copper is the next largest component (about 27–33%), and small, deliberate additions of aluminum (≈2.30–3.15%) and titanium (≈0.35–0.85%) enable age hardening. Trace amounts of iron, manganese, carbon, silicon and sulfur are held to low limits so the alloy will form the fine Ni3(Ti,Al) precipitates that give K-500 its strengthened structure.

Parag Metals is a trusted Monel K-500 supplier, offering this material in various forms such as  sheets, plates, bars, wire and tubes for various industries and uses. We hold common tempers and support fabrication for pump shafts, valve trim, springs and corrosive-service fasteners, and we work with customers on material equivalents and mill specifications to match field requirements.

Why Choose Monel K500 – Performance Advantages

Monel K500 is a nickel-copper alloy that has been hardened by precipitation. It is made for uses that need both high mechanical strength and good resistance to corrosion. It has much higher tensile and yield strength than regular Monel grades and it still works well in harsh environments. Key performance advantages of Monel K500 include:
  • Age-hardening gives it a lot of strength making it good for heavy duty mechanical parts.
  • It is very resistant to corrosion in marine, offshore and chemical settings.
  • Higher resistance to wear and fatigue than Monel 400
  • Good toughness and stability in size when subjected to dynamic and impact loading
  • Monel K500 is widely used in important applications where reliability, strength and resistance to corrosion are very important because of these qualities.
Due to these properties, Monel K500 is widely used in critical applications where reliability, strength and corrosion resistance are essential.

In typical conditions the alloy covers a wide strength window that depends on heat treatment. In the annealed state K-500 is relatively ductile and easy to machine; tensile strength near 92 ksi with high elongation is common. After controlled solution treatment and aging the alloy develops much higher strength, age-hardened tempers commonly fall into a range of roughly 145–196 ksi, with corresponding rises in yield and Rockwell C hardness (typical HRC values move from the mid-20s in softer tempers to the mid-30s or higher in fully aged conditions). Typical age-hardening cycles used by industry are in the region of about 980–1125°F (527–607°C) depending on desired properties. These characteristics make K-500 useful where the combination of corrosion resistance and high strength is required.
K-500 also shows steady physical constants designers rely on: density is about 8.44 g/cm³, melting occurs roughly in the 2400–2460°F (1315–1350°C) band, and thermal conductivity is moderate. The alloy is essentially non-magnetic at ordinary temperatures and performs well in seawater and many chloride-bearing environments; service limits depend on component design and temper (springs are commonly used to around 500°F / 260°C, while prolonged exposure at much higher temperatures causes overaging and softening).

Monel K-500 Mechanical Properties

Properties change with heat treatment: soft tempers are ductile and easier to machine; aged tempers are much stronger and harder. Because strength and toughness trade off with each other, manufacturers tailor solution treatments, aging cycles and optional cold work to reach the right balance for springs, shafts or fasteners.
