AMS 5858 is produced through multiple melting steps, followed by solution heat treatment at 1800 °F (980 °C). It is known as a welding-grade material, delivering strength at temperature up to 1300 °F (704 °C) while resisting corrosion up to 1500 °F (816 °C). The alloy support common welding methods such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, and shielded metal arc. Despite its hardness, it can be formed and cold-worked with ease, which improves creep strength. To achieve maximum tensile strength, the alloy is first solution treated then cold worked, and aged.
